Facial Volume Changes + Facial Expressions Reference

Facial volume is neither created nor destroyed.

When we make expressions, our muscles push together or pull apart the surrounding soft tissues in our face (other muscles, skin, fat). These manipulations create depth changes. When one area bulks, as a consequence, another area thins. Expressions in a 3D character can look inexplicably off when such depth changes are not accounted for.
